In this post, let’s explore the everlasting allure of this ancient art form of Andhra Pradesh, that encapsulates storytelling through painting on textiles. The word Kalamkari has its origin in Persian words qalam (pen) and kari (craftsmanship). This exquisite hand painted or block printed traditional cotton textile is crafted with vegetable dyes.
Shrikalahasti and Masulipatnam are two towns exhibiting different style forms of this handcrafted luxury. Shrikalahasti narrates religious and mythological stories while Masulipatnam echoes secular philosophy and endorses narratives inspired from nature like tree of life, flowers, peacocks etc.
